1. Why should my organization hire a grant writing consultant? If you are thinking about outsourcing grant writing services, chances are your organization is either not large enough for full-time development staff or your current development department is operating at capacity (or overload). Working with a grant writing consultant frees up your time and enables you to manage day-to-day operations while outsourcing professional services from a grants development specialist. Also, because consultants are contracted to perform highly concentrated services, this approach may be more cost-effective than hiring regular staff.

If you have questions about whether working with a grant writing and development consultant is right for your organization, please contact me.

2. What types of organizations do you work with? Many of my clients are small to mid-sized human services and community economic development organizations. I have a special affinity for working with organizations that strive to improve social outcomes in low-income communities of color. My experience also includes writing grants in the areas of arts and culture, advocacy, the environment, and capital projects. I also provide general writing services to for-profit businesses.

3. Are there any kinds of organizations you do not work with? I tend not to work with startup nonprofit organizations, day care centers, or group homes. Also, except in rare instances, I do not work with for-profit businesses seeking grants.

4. What is your approach to proposal development? I work with clients to develop top-notch grant materials that stand out. In addition to assisting organizations to articulate their unique elements and strengths, I also help clients to think through and clearly lay out their programs, goals and outcomes, and evaluation methodology. My writing style tends to be very clear and concise. Essentially, if a funder or proposal reviewer cannot understand the proposed project, the likelihood of receiving funding is extremely low.

5. Can you guarantee that my proposal will be funded? No one can guarantee that any given project or proposal will be funded, no matter how innovative the concept or how well-written the proposal. My job is to present your organization's case to prospective funders in the most compelling and articulate manner possible. In the event your proposal is declined, I will work with you to follow up with the funder to gain feedback and insight.

6. What are your fees? Depending on the project, I work on a flat fee basis or hourly rate. Although many clients choose to work with me on a medium to long-term basis, I am open to working on one-time or short-term projects. I do not work on a contingent pay or commission basis, nor do I accept bonus payments. Please feel free to contact me regarding my rates and availability.
